The last free edition of the independent

Starting next week, a new chapter begins in the media landscape of the Clarence Valley as three decades of complimentary distribution of the Clarence Valley Independent draw to a close. As of May 8, 2024, readers will be invited to invest $2 for their weekly edition of the newspaper. This shift is necessitated by rising production expenses, compelling management to introduce this fee. However, alongside this change, readers can anticipate enhancements to the newspaper format, such as increased pages and additional features in the weeks to come.

Rest assured, the newspaper will maintain its current content, including articles contributed by the community and stories from journalists based in Grafton and Lower Clarence. Additionally, readers will have the option to opt for a home delivery subscription service, available in selected areas.

This decision to transition the CV Independent into a paid publication stems from the financial strain induced by the post-Covid years, subsequent declines in advertising revenue, and escalating production costs, rendering the existing business model untenable.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the advertisers who have steadfastly supported our local independent newspaper. Their backing has been indispensable during this challenging period, without which our survival would have been imperiled.

Amidst discussions of the decline of regional media in Australia post-Covid, with over 120 newspapers shuttering in the past four years, we are committed to not contributing to this statistic. Despite the allure of social media for some seeking local news, we believe the CV Independent remains the most authentic source. Unlike the often skewed narratives found on social platforms, our publication endeavors to present the unadulterated truth.

For instance, consider our coverage of local council news. While social media may abound with anti-council sentiments, or even outright criticisms, our newspaper provides a balanced perspective, offering readers the “real” story.

At the “Independent,” our commitment to delivering genuine stories remains unwavering, and we look forward to continuing this tradition well into the future.
