Three stars for Upper Yorke road

Fraser Ellis, the Member for Narungga, celebrated the recent announcement as a significant boon for the road network on the Yorke Peninsula (YP). He emphasized the critical need for major improvements to the region’s roads, particularly highlighting the longstanding neglect of Upper Yorke Road, which dates back to the 1950s.

After years of persistent advocacy, Ellis expressed his excitement for the positive impact this funding would have on residents, tourists, and primary producers who rely on Upper Yorke Road for safe and efficient travel. He also anticipated relief for school bus and ambulance users, emphasizing the broader community benefits.

The section from Arthurton to Kulpara had earned the dubious title of “SA’s Worst Grain Road” in a 2022 survey conducted by Grain Producers SA. Farmer Chris Moloney’s initiative during Country Cabinet’s visit in February 2023, where he took officials on a firsthand tour of the road’s hazards, played a crucial role in highlighting the urgency of repairs.

Brad Perry, CEO of Grain Producers SA, lauded the funding announcement as a significant victory for both safety and productivity, emphasizing the importance of road upgrades for efficient transportation of the region’s substantial grain crop.

Leonie Kerley, Mayor of Barunga West Council, underscored the broader significance of the Upper Yorke Road, linking Adelaide to the Top of the Yorke and the Mid North. She welcomed the funding from both the Australian and SA Governments as a crucial step towards enhancing public safety, promoting tourism, and fostering economic growth in the region.
