Coonawarra’s Wine Community gathers to herald in the new vintage

The Coonawarra Grape and Wine industry is gearing up to welcome the 2024 Vintage (V24) in style, with a gathering at the iconic Coonawarra Railway Siding for the official Vintage Launch Ceremony. On Wednesday, 6th March, stakeholders and supporters of the wine industry will come together to toast to the upcoming Coonawarra grape harvest and bid farewell to the previous season.

The ceremony will feature traditional rituals such as grape stomping and the christening of the new vintage with a bottle smash, reminiscent of a ship setting sail on its maiden voyage. It’s a time when the entire Coonawarra Community, from grape growers to winemakers and everyone in between, comes together to celebrate.

The event will commence with the stirring sound of bagpipes, played by Coonawarra Vignerons Patron Doug Balnaves, paying homage to the region’s founding father, John Riddoch. Hugh Koch, Executive Officer of Coonawarra Vignerons, emphasizes the significance of Vintage, not just for the local community but for the entire district. He states, “Vintage in Coonawarra marks the start of a new year, symbolizing economic growth, job creation, tourism, and our global reputation as a premier wine region.”

Dan Redman, President of Coonawarra Vignerons, is excited about the Vintage Launch and expects strong support from the local community. He reflects on the importance of vintage, bringing the community together and highlighting Coonawarra’s contribution to both the local and national economies.

During vintage, the region welcomes workers from across Australia and the world to participate in grape picking and winemaking activities. Community members are invited to attend the V24 Launch ceremony at the Coonawarra Railway Siding, followed by a morning tea. Guests are encouraged to register their attendance online.
