Pole Descendants Line Up

Thirty-five descendants of the Pole family, hailing from various corners including Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, and Mildura, converged in Donald over the weekend of April 27 and 28 for a meaningful gathering to delve into their ancestral roots.

Led by Dunstan, president of the Donald Historical Society, the event unfolded with shared tales of Pole family history over cups of tea and Kooka’s biscuits, generously provided by the reunion organizer, Robert Pole. Gratitude was expressed to the dedicated volunteers of the Donald Historical Society for their warm hospitality.

The itinerary included visits to notable sites such as the Donald Archives, where attendees explored resources to unearth more about their Pole ancestors, and the Old Police Camp, where friendly volunteers were on hand to guide them. The idyllic autumn weather and the charming ambience of Donald added to the success of the weekend.

Activities commenced at the Courthouse Museum, where Ann extended a warm welcome to all. A picnic lunch at the picturesque Lakeside Caravan Park preceded a visit to Swan Water West Cemetery to pay respects at the previously unmarked grave of Thomas Pole’s wife, Caroline, and their young son. En route back to Donald, the farm site at Rich Avon East, once home to pioneer settlers James and Mary Pole, was revisited, followed by a delightful meal at the Donald Hotel.

Sunday morning saw a visit to Donald Cemetery to locate more Pole ancestors’ graves, followed by a barbecue lunch featuring homemade sausages and tomato sauce at Lakeside Caravan Park. The expedition continued to Birchip Cemetery, where additional Pole ancestor graves were discovered. A visit to the Birchip Historical Society offered further insights into Pole family history, concluding with an enlightening talk at Birchip Cropping Group’s headquarters by yet another Pole descendant.

The weekend left lasting memories and heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to its success.
