Safer drivers, safer roads

Addressing concerns raised within the industry, Jade Benham, the Member for Mildura, is urging the Minister for Roads and Road Safety to tackle the issue of unlicensed truck drivers on our roads. Ms. Benham emphasizes the consistent message from the industry that forthcoming heavy vehicle licensing reforms could worsen the problem. She believes resolving this issue should take precedence over introducing any reforms.

Ms. Benham is seeking clarification from the Minister on three key points: the number of fines issued to unlicensed truck drivers in 2023, the measures and strategies implemented within the road safety portfolio to address the problem, and the consideration of incentives for training.

“Road safety is paramount, and we must address the issue of unlicensed truck drivers before implementing heavy vehicle licensing reforms that may exacerbate the problem,” Ms. Benham stated.

The Member for Mildura anticipates receiving responses from the Minister and is committed to working collaboratively to find effective solutions for enhancing road safety in the region.
